Does Tally Become a Pretty In Uglies?

Uglies is Netflix‘s newest dystopian thriller and the movie holds a strong message. Based on the hit young adult book series by Scott Westerfield, the movie deals with a world where being Pretty is highly valued while being Ugly is looked down upon.

The movie follows two Uglies Tally Youngblood (Joey King) and her friend Peris (Chase Stokes). When people turn 16, they are given the chance to become Pretty after a very heavy cosmetic surgery and move to a more desirable city. When Peris becomes Pretty, he forgets everything about his friendship with Tally and she becomes extremely upset. Tally befriends Shay (Brianne Tju) who introduces her to the world of The Smoke, which rebels against the norms of becoming pretty. She becomes hesitant to join her friend and returns back to Uglyville.

Tally successfully comes into contact with The Smoke and reunites with Shay again. She enjoys life as a rebel and falls in love with David (Keith Powers) whose mom Maddy (Charmin Lee) develops a cure for the Pretties, since the lesions in their brains make them forgetful about choice after the surgery. Dr. Cable finds the rebels after Tally burns her tracker and both sides become hostile immediately. In a turn of events, Shay becomes a Pretty and rejects the cure that Maddy made. Not wanting to test an unwilling subject, Tally volunteers to become Pretty, but does she end up following through with it?
