Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson were one of our favorite celebrity couples. They were together for seven years and recently it was reported that they’d broken up until someone from the actress’ team set the record straight.
First linked in 2017, per Page Six, Dakota and Chris dated for two years before reportedly taking a break in 2019. They reconciled shortly after and sparked engagement rumors in 2020 when Dakota was spotted wearing a ring on that finger.
It’s not 100% clear when the proposal happened but insiders told Page Six they’d been engaged for six years. A source told The Mirror “They are in no rush to plan the wedding but are just enjoying making their commitment official.”

Despite earlier reports on August 16, 2024, it seems not. People confirmed, per her representative, that “They are happily together.” Phew! The false news came courtesy of the Daily Mail, reporting that the couple had tried really hard to make it work. “Chris and Dakota have tried desperately hard over the past few months to make their relationship work,” a source told the outlet.
“They’ll always have love for each other but they’ve both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term. They’re both busy people, Chris has been in Europe with Coldplay and they both have personal priorities, passions, and work commitments, which don’t naturally intertwine with each other. They wanted it to work but it just hasn’t, and they’ve now accepted it is best to move on.”
Neither have commented publicly on the split—they’ve generally avoided speaking about their relationship to the press in general. But apparently, they took another break earlier in the year. A source told People they were “going strong” in June 2024. “They’ve had ups and downs, but now they’re definitely back on,” the insider said.
Rumors began swirling that their relationship was in trouble in May when a fan shared her sweet interaction with the Coldplay frontman. “That moment when Chris Martin @Coldplay saw me struggling to walk, had his car stop and gave me a lift. Blooming amazing. Can’t believe this happened. What a decent bloke,” Saundra Glenn tweeted, adding, “We had a nice chat too. He is single and likes #Luton 😉.”
