Who’s the Killer in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder?

Warning: Major plot spoilers ahead for A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

We all love a murder mystery and Holly Jackon’s young adult series A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder has taken BookTok by storm, not to mention it’s finding a new audience in the US after the BBC adaptation has found its way to Netflix. But who is the killer?

The Netflix/BBC show’s premise is as follows: Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was killed by her boyfriend Sal Singh in a murder-suicide. Sal’s body is found shortly after Andie’s death. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it. But smart and single-minded Pip Fitz-Amobi isn’t so sure and she’s determined to prove it. But what if he’s not? That means the killer is still out there.

Who’s the killer in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder?

Spoilers ahead, obviously.

We’re led to believe that Sal is the killer, but we eventually find out that it was actually Becca. The misdirect comes after Andie and Elliot fight; she shoves her, causing her to hit her head against the countertop.

When Becca and Andie fight, Andie hits her head again and, in a cold and heartless move, watches her older sibling choke to death on her own vomit because she’s concussed. Becca then hid her sister’s body in a well underground in the woods.

We can sympathize with Becca to some degree. To make enough money to be able to move out, Andie starts dealing drugs and she was the one who sold Max the Rohypnol he used to drug and sexually assault Becca. When Andie refuses to go to the police with her sister to report the rape because it would reveal her dealing, Becca grows more resentful.

We also discover that Sal didn’t take his own life, either. His English teacher, Elliot, abused his position of power to have a sexual relationship with Andie. He then framed Sal for her murder to hide his sexual abuse of a teenager. Elliot drugged Sal, smothered him, sent a fake confession text from Sal’s phone, and faked his suicide.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is available to stream on Netflix.
