It’s simple, quick to do, and can easily handle any high-intensity workout. Plus, it works well with all hair types.I’m a big fan of this timeless look.Actual footage.Just gather your hair at the nape of your neck, secure it with a hair tie, and you’re ready to hit the gym. For an added touch of glamour, wrap a strand of your hair around the hair tie to hide it. This style keeps your hair off your face and exudes a sporty yet sophisticated vibe.#2: Messy BunThe messy bun is another easy workout hairstyle for those who prefer a laid-back, effortless look. In fact, this is my go-to hairstyle for everything.Although it might seem haphazard, it’s a great way to keep your hair off your face and neck during a sweaty workout session. To achieve this look, gather your hair into a high ponytail, twist it around the base, and secure with a hair tie. Don’t worry about stray hairs or unevenness—it adds to the ‘messy’ aesthetic. The messy bun is stylish, practical, and perfect for those intense cardio or HIIT sessions. Plus, it transitions smoothly from the gym to post-workout errands!#3: Boxer BraidsMoving on to boxer braids… this perfect hairstyle is not only trendy but also extremely practical for intense workout sessions. Originating from the boxing ring – hence the name – this style is perfect for keeping every single strand of hair in place, regardless of how vigorous your movements are.To achieve this look, part your hair down the middle and create two tight Dutch braids on each side. Secure with hair ties at the ends. This style is especially great for ladies with longer hair who want to avoid the hassle of hair flipping around during their workout. After you finish, take out the braids for beautiful, heatless waves. Now that’s a win-win!#4: Half-Up TopknotThe half-up top knot is a brilliant choice for those who want the best of both worlds – hair off the face but still flowing freely. This style is a favorite among fitness enthusiasts who want a chic yet fuss-free hairstyle. To nail this look, gather the top half of your hair into a ponytail and twist it into a knot at the crown of your head, securing it with a hair tie. Let the rest of your hair hang loose. This workout hairstyle is perfect for low-impact exercises like yoga or pilates… where you don’t want your hair bopping around but still want to maintain some length.#5: Braided-Up PonyWhat’s better than a regular ponytail? A regular ponytail with braids. It’s a great option for those who want to keep their hair fully away from their face without compromising on style. To do a braided ponytail, first section off the top part of your hair and braid it down the middle section. Secure the braid with a hair tie. Then, gather the rest of your hair, along with the braid, into a high ponytail and secure it with another hair tie.The result? A chic, braided-up pony that stays put throughout your entire workout session.#6: Pipe Braids & Infinity BraidsPipe braids really take the cake when it comes to workout hairstyles that merge style with functionality. These intricate braids not only look stunning, but also keep your hair off your face and neck during an intense workout. While the finished look is incomparable, I must admit there’s a bit of a learning curve. But don’t worry, you’ll get it with a bit of practice! What better way to learn about it than from Nicci Welsh, the inventor of the pipe braid? he infinity braid, on the other hand, is a bit trickier but equally rewarding.Starting with a ponytail, divide the hair into two sections. First, take a smaller part from the right side. Weave this smaller part in an ‘infinity’ pattern over, under, and over the bigger two parts. As you continue, add more hair. Keep adding more hair as you do it. Continue this pattern until you reach the end, and secure it with a hair tie.HAU2 will show you how to do it in this easy-to-follow tutorial. #7: Bubble PonytailThe bubble ponytail is another workout hairstyle that beautifully combines aesthetics with functionality. It’s a playful and trendy take on the traditional ponytail that’s sure to turn heads at the gym.To achieve this look, start by pulling your hair into a high ponytail and securing it with a hair tie. Then, place additional hair ties evenly down the length of your pony, fluffing up the hair between each tie to create ‘bubbles.’This workout hairstyle is especially great for those with long, thick hair. It keeps your hair off your face during workouts while adding a fun, distinctive touch to your gym ensemble. It’s great for after exercising and can easily go from sporty to stylish without any problems. If you need guidance on getting started, I love this tutorial by Alex Gaboury! #8: Braided BangsThis style is perfect for those with short hair or bangs that tend to fall into their faces during workouts. It keeps hair out of your face and adds a touch of elegance to your workout attire. To achieve this look, start with damp hair for better holding power. Take a small section of hair at the front, divide it into three parts, and start braiding towards one side, adding more hair into the braid as you move along the hairline.Once you’ve reached the end, use bobby pins or regular hair ties to secure the braid. The rest of your hair can be incorporated into any other great workout hairstyle.#9: Mohawk Pull-Through BraidThe pull-through braid is another one of my favorite hairstyles for working out. It’s kinda like the best hair hack ever – you can create a really fancy-looking braid in a fraction of the time.To create this look, start by sectioning off the top part of your hair from forehead to nape and tie it into a ponytail. Then, secure a small section from the top of the ponytail with a hair tie a little down the length, creating a ‘bubble.’Split this ‘bubble’ in half, and pull the rest of the ponytail through the hole you just created. Repeat this process until you reach the end of the ponytail, making a series of ‘bubbles’ down the center of your head, giving the illusion of a mohawk. This tutorial by Kayley Melissa is everything! #10: The “Katniss Everdeen” Side BraidThe Katniss Everdeen Side Braid, named after the tenacious heroine of “The Hunger Games” series, is the perfect gym hairstyle, ideal for those with medium to long hair.A distinctive feature of this style is that it’s not just a typical side braid; it starts from one side of your head and wraps all the way around to the other side.To achieve this look, start at the left side of your head (or the right, depending on your preference) and begin a French braid, continually adding more hair as you move across your head. When you reach the opposite side, continue with a normal braid down the length of your hair and secure it with a hair tie. This workout hairstyle is not only effortlessly stylish and inspired by a beloved character, but it’s also designed to keep your hair secure and off your face throughout your entire workout. This is the hairstyle I chose to wear during a CrossFit competition a few years ago. It was perfect… I never once had to adjust my hair during the competition (which included three intense workouts in the hot summer heat). Not the best pic of my hair, but you get the point…General FAQHow should you wear your hair when working out?Working out doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for comfort when it comes to your hair.
